"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a big movie based on a small idea. The Micky Mouse segment of "fantasia" serves as the inspiration... and it took five people to hammer out the script for the movie.

     not a good sign.

nicolas cage and his latest hair piece star as balthazar... a centuries old sorcerer searching for merlin's heir.

he thinks he's found it in dave.. a physics nerd played by jay baruchel.

together they have to work against an evil sorcerer played by alfred molina... bent on destorying the world.

the training segments are fun... and there's a nifty shout-out to fantasia.
but like most movies this summer... the sorcerer's apprentice is mediocre effort with only a few bright spots.

what's really missing here is any enthusiasm from cage.
he's best when he's performing completely unhinged... but he's playing it completely serious here... missing an opportunity to create a memorable character.

     nats

maybe cage was just bored with "the sorcerer's apprentice."
     he's not the only one.
